Lib Dems: Keeping Britain Green

by Steve Beasant on 29 September, 2014

The Liberal Democrats are the only major party that puts tackling climate change at our heart. We were the first party to talk about climate change in Parliament – back in the 1980s when the environment was an unpopular issue.

Ever since, we have worked to make Britain greener. In the Coalition Government, our Environment Minister, Ed Davey, has worked to make sure the environment stays at the top of the agenda, even though it isn’t a priority for the Conservatives.

We cannot build a stronger economy for the long term without creating a greener, more sustainable economy too. That’s why we are:

  • Creating 200,000 new green jobs by investing in renewable energy. We have already doubled the amount of electricity generated from offshore wind.
  • Planting 1 million trees in England, the first government tree planting programme since the 1970s.
  • Introducing a 5p plastic bag charge to help clean up our environment and protect Britain’s natural habitat.

For Labour and the Conservatives, the environment is just an after-thought, something to support when times are good but to abandon as soon as it becomes unpopular.

The Liberal Democrats will never abandon our commitment to the environment. We are the only party that can be trusted to deliver green jobs and green growth in Government.
