If you haven’t seen your primary care doctor in a while (or, uh, ever), do yourself a favor and install the ePSS app from the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Plug in a few basic facts about yourself, and the app will show you which counseling, preventive, and screening services the USPSTF recommends for people of your age, sex, smoking status, and reproductive status (whether you are pregnant, and whether you are sexually active). Tap on each listing, and you can see why the test or service is recommended, and what are its benefits and risks.

The AHRQ grades tests according to how likely they are to benefit you:

  • “A” services are recommended because there is a “high certainty that the net benefit is substantial”

  • “B” services are also recommended, but their benefits are either smaller or less certain.

  • “C” services are ones you should talk to your doctor about. Most people probably don’t need them, but that may depend on your preferences and your doctor’s judgment.

  • “D” services are not recommended. The harms are likely to outweigh any benefits.

  • “I” services have insufficient evidence to recommend them. If you’re interested in one of these, read up and talk to your doctor—but you may hear that the test won’t tell you anything useful.

So take a look at what you may have missed. The app is free, and so are the screenings—preventive care recommended by the USPSTF is included in all ACA-compliant insurance plans without any out-of-pocket cost.
