One day in August, two of my old friends were in town. And since it was summer, and since I pretty much had full flexibility with respect to my schedule, I opted to just spend the day with them and hangout, thinking that I typically do work in the weekends anyway outside of my 9-to-5 schedule. These two friends of mine were in Leipzig, and they took the train to head to Berlin for the day. The last time I saw them was back in Buffalo, so two years ago.
I can't believe it was such an exciting thing, seeing them get off the ICE train in Hauptbahnhof. We bought day tickets for the two of them, and then we walked all over town, showing them where I get my good coffee, where the cool neighborhoods are in Prenzlauer Berg, in addition to seeing the main sights of the city, such as Gendarmenmarkt, Unter den Linden, Brandenburger Tor, Tiergarten, as well as the Reichstag. And yes, I took them to Bergmannstrasse for lunch.
I guess what was rather remarkable for me was the fact that we still had plenty of things to talk about, even though we haven't seen each other for 2 years now. They are now based in Washington DC, and the three of us pretty much left Buffalo around the same time. They attended my graduation party in August 2012, and it seemed that they moved out the same weekend that I moved out of Buffalo.
And yes, we talked about ourselves, we talked about others. We talked about life in Washington DC and in Berlin. We talked about atheism. And many other things. It felt like we just continued where we left off.
It's a pity that there's a huge distance preventing us from seeing each other often, but hey, sometimes email works too. And now that I am not on Facebook anymore, I use email more often now.
