Lucid Motors promised us all an "exciting livestreamed announcement" today, but it was mostly exciting for the state of Arizona. Rumors have been floating around for over a month now that Lucid would build its electric cars in Arizona. The company says that its "new manufacturing center" will create 2,000 new jobs by 2022, and that it will focus on hiring veterans. Brian Barron, Lucid's director of global manufacturing, said at the event that the car itself is one that, "redefines what driving performance ... is all about." Lucid, previously called Atieva, should show the concept of its upcoming electric sedan by the end of the year before sales are supposed to start in 2018. The company did have two alpha prototypes to show off at the event, and Lucid CTO (and former Tesla VP) Peter Rawlinson said that they show just how dramatic a change you can make to vehicle design when you go electric. He also said that Lucid will offer a model with a range of more than 400 miles. That's due to the 87-kilowatt-hour battery pack the car is supposed to have. Along with a promised 1,000 horsepower (previously pegged at 900 hp), the car should have a 0-to-60 mile-per-hour acceleration time of under three seconds. Lucid has previously said it would make 20,000 vehicles in its first year of production and then have the capacity of 130,000 vehicles a year some time after that. Lucid has received funding from Japan-based Mitsui and China's Beijing Auto.
