Poll: Trump's approval rating after first month is historically low

A month into Donald Trump's presidency and his job approval rating keeps breaking records -- but probably not in the way the administration would prefer.

According to a Gallup poll over the weekend, Trump's 40 percent job approval is 21 points below the historic average for elected presidents around mid-February (61 percent). That's also 11 points below the lowest mid-February numbers for any other president in Gallup's history.

While across the board Trump's numbers are historically low, approval ratings have become hotly debated under the new administration. Discrepancies have been popping up across varying polling organizations as some paint a rosier picture than others.

For example, Rasmussen's latest Daily Presidential Tracking Poll, which has traditionally found results that are more positive for Republicans, gives Trump a 55 percent approval number. While a survey released on Thursday by the Pew Research Center has Trump at 38 percent.

That's a 17 point difference between both polls.

Nonetheless, the president's numbers have seen a slight uptick over the weekend, according to Gallup. Trump was set to enter the weekend below 40 percent, but now heads into week one of his second month as president with a 41 percent rating.

Still 55 percent of Americans disapprove of the president's job so far, according to Gallup.

The president has encouraged American citizens to dismiss surveys that don't reflect positively on his administration, tweeting earlier this month that "any negative polls are fake news."

On Friday President Trump called the press "the enemy of the American People!" and the White House is not backing down from those comments.

In an interview on Face the Nation Sunday, White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said Trump calling the press "the enemy" should be taken "seriously."
