Tom Brake fights for stronger renters’ rights

by Steve Beasant on 13 October, 2016

Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington Tom Brake will join Generation Rent and Liberal Democrat Peer Olly Grender to protest for stronger rights for renters.

The protest will be taking place on Thursday 13th October outside College Green followed by the presentation of the petition at the Department for Communities and Local Government.  It will also be attended by Shelter and The Debrief, who will be presenting their Make Renting Fair petition with over 270,000 signatures to Housing Minister Gavin Barwell. The purpose of the protest is to highlight the difficulty that many renters face with unfair charges, rent and agency fees.

Lib Dem Peer Olly Grender has tabled a bill in parliament for Renter’s Rights, supported by Tom. The bill seeks to get rid of punitive administrative fees and guarantee certain rights, such as mandatory electrical tomchecks.

Tom Brake,  said:

“With renting increasingly becoming the most viable option for not just young people, but also those looking for a more affordable alternative to home ownership, it is vital that we send a message that renters deserve rights. Our Bill will call on the Government to make crucial changes to renters’ rights and to stop the exploitation that too often occurs in a competitive housing market.”
