What's New on Hulu in May 2021

Streaming services as still dealing with the fallout from the lack of big theatrical releases in 2020, which means that this month’s Hulu lineup is once again short on newer movies I’ve actually heard of. But a little googling has revealed a bunch of more obscure indie releases and documentaries I’m definitely adding to my queue.

One of them, MLK/FBI (May 14) feels especially relevant; this documentary, released last year to strong reviews, delves into the FBI’s campaign to quash the influence of one of the most influential figures of the Civil Rights movement. Also in the realm of non-fiction—albeit far lighter in tone—is Some Kind of Heaven (May 13), which explores a seemingly utopian senior citizen development in Florida hiding some unusual secrets.

And back in the soothing world of fiction, I’m keen to check out The Legend of Baron T’oa (May 3), a critically lauded New Zealand comedy import about a man who sets out to recover his father’s championship wrestling belt from a group of local toughs. Hit Girl Chloe Grace Moretz stars in Shadow in the Cloud (May 5), an alt-history WWII fantasy adventure about a spy who encounters a literal force of evil while trying to abscond with top secret documents—that sounds fun.

If you can stomach it, Little Fish (May 7) is a new romantic drama set during a pandemic that is gripping a near-future world on the brink of environmental collapse (huh, can’t relate). And Saint Maud (May 13) is an acclaimed British psychological horror film about a woman who converts to Catholicism and becomes obsessed with saving the soul of a woman she knows, and falls down a spiritual black hole.

Here’s everything else coming to and leaving from Hulu in May 2021, including a new season of Shrill and the premiere of Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., which stars Patton Oswalt as the voice of one of comics’ silliest supervillains.
