Sam Lloyd, best known as sad-sack lawyer Ted Buckland on Scrubs, died Friday. He was 56.

The actor had been diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2019, per Entertainment Weekly, only weeks after his wife, Vanessa, gave birth to their first child. At the time, doctors discovered an inoperable tumor in his brain.

Lloyd, who is the nephew of Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd, had screen career spanning three decades. He jumped between TV and film, in projects as wide-ranging as Flubber, Galaxy Quest, Seinfeld, The West Wing, and Desperate Housewives.

In addition to his work as an actor, Lloyd was an accomplished musician with the a cappella group The Blanks (which Scrubs fans might recognize as The Worthless Peons) and the Beatles cover band The Butties.

But Lloyd was probably most recognizable as Ted on Scrubs, appearing in all nine seasons and even reprising the role for a guest arc in Cougar Town.

Some of Lloyd's former colleagues paid tribute to him on social media, including Scrubs star Zach Braff and Scrubs and Cougar Town creator Bill Lawrence.
