Over the past couple of years, enormous strides have been made for trans visibility. The issues plaguing the trans community are by no means solved, but with people like Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner bringing trans experiences to mainstream media and Andreja Pejic and Hari Nef signing major modeling contracts, there is definite movement in a positive direction. But the world still has far to go, and the trailer for "Zoolander 2" has become a glaring reminder of that fact.

In the trailer for the hotly anticipated sequel, we briefly meet Benedict Cumberbatch's character, an androgynous model named "All" who is introduced as "the biggest supermodel in the whole world." Upon meeting, Derek Zoolander asks All, "Are you, like, a male model or a female model?" After All delivers an arguably cryptic response, Owen Wilson's Hans adds, "No, I think he's asking, 'Do you have a hot dog or a bun?'" If you're cringing right now, you're not alone.

Naturally, the bit didn't go over well, and a petition was created to boycott the film due to its "over-the-top, cartoonish mockery of androgyne/trans/non-binary individuals." While there's a possibility that All's storyline could lead to Derek and Hans' enlightenment -- these are the same characters who, last movie, did not understand the concept of an architectural model or how computers work, after all -- the joke taken out of context is just plain crude and as the petition states, "endorses harmful and dangerous perceptions of the queer community at large." MTV News has reached out to Paramount for comment but has not heard back as of press time.

Whether or not there's more to All's story beyond the trailer remains to be seen, but as for now, there are more than 12,000 people and counting who won't be watching to find out.
