How Was the August Swimming Challenge?

Did you swim a lot this August? My own summer was chaotic enough that I’ll admit I mostly stuck to my familiar gym routine, but I hope a bunch of you took advantage of the opportunity to swim some laps and get a few pool workouts in.

I did do one specific type of pool workout, which Chilledmilk joked about when we talked about “brick” workouts—but dropping heavy things in a pool is actually really fun:

My version of this was diving for little pool toys during a family vacation. I took turns with the kids: We had some toy fish that would sink straight to the bottom, some torpedo-shaped sharks that would move horizontally as they descended, and some little jellyfish that would float slowly down. My youngest would collect the toys we found and throw them back in; the kids and I would race to see who could pick them up from the pool bottom first.

There’s no doubt that playing in the water is a fun way to move your body, even if it feels more like fun than a workout. Even if you regularly swim laps, taking the time to play around can still help you get the feel of the water—a sort of elusive body awareness that you don’t get unless you give yourself an opportunity to play.

So tell us, what kinds of workouts, intentional or not, did you get in the water this August? What did you learn?
