What's New on Netflix in September 2023

The final season of Sex Education; a new Wes Anderson film; and a satiric, vampiric alt-history tale.

After a star-studded August, September is a lighter month for Netflix when it comes to flashy original fare, but there are still some gems for those of you who have yet to ditch the service in the wake of rising prices and a crackdown on password sharing.

On September 21, Netflix will drop the final season of the raunchy, heartfelt high school comedy Sex Education. The end of season three brought a major change, as Moordale Academy closed down after a sex-positive student protest caused the school to lose its funding and close. As the final season begins, the returning cast members will be starting Sixth Form at a new school and trying to figure out their futures while navigating their love lives (and sex lives) in the meantime.

Director Wes Anderson already released one new movie this year, the pandemic-delayed Asteroid City; sometime this month, Netflix will drop his second—though at only 39 minutes, it’s more of a short film. His adaptation of Roald Dahl’s brief tale The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, and Ben Kingsley. There’s no trailer or confirmed release date yet.

Also on the way from Chilean director Pablo Larraín (Jackie, Spencer), El Conde (Sept. 15) is a black-and-white horror satire positing that Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet was actually an ancient vampire bored with life, distractedly going through the motions of cruelly ruling over the country while wishing for death.

Here’s everything else coming to (and leaving) Netflix in September, including Scout’s Honor: The Secret Files of the Boy Scouts of America (Sept. 6), a look into that once-admired organization’s history of covering up sexual abuse.
