3 Tips to Updating your Address with Government Agencies

Moving from one house to another is a big task. Whether it’s just moving to another city or even moving to a different state, there are many things you need to accomplish to ensure that it is a smooth move. Aside from all the packing, labeling, renting a moving van and more, one of the most important things you should not forget is to change your address and update the necessary people about it.

You might think that it is not important and just a small detail that you can overlook because you are too busy with the move. But you don’t want to regret when you realize you’ve missed an important appointment or deadline because you failed to read your mail as it was still sent to your old address.

Government agencies must also be informed of the change in your address when you’ve made your move. Take a look at the tips below for what you need to do to make the process smoother.

1. Change your address before you make your move – you might be busy with many details of your big move, especially if you are planning to move to a different state, but it is imperative that you carve out some time to deal with the change of your address before you make your move.

So the first thing you should do is update your address with the United States Postal Service. This way, you can be sure that all your mail will be forwarded to your new address and you won’t need to wonder if you are missing important correspondence. You don’t want to end up like the citizen who wrote of the hassle she went through going back to her old city (which is on a different state) because she had to do jury duty.

Changing your address is very easy as there are many websites, such as postalchangeaddress.com where you can just fill up the form and start the process of having it changed.

2. Create a checklist of who needs to be notified of the change in your address – there are several people and agencies or companies that need to be informed of your move. What you can do is look at your present mail and list down what companies or agencies regularly send you mail.

You need to list down which ones need to be informed before you move, and which ones can be put off until you’ve settled down. One of your priorities should be utility services like electricity, water, telephone, and cable. You need to tell them so that they can switch the service over to your new house, or discontinue the service if needed.

3. Inform the agencies once you’ve settled down – the government agencies can be informed when you’ve made your move. After you’ve updated to your new address, agencies like the IRS, Social Security Administration, and Voter’s Registration Office must be informed right away. If you drive a car, make sure to get a new driver’s license with the Department of Motor Vehicles within 30 days of your move.
