Raising pension age shows why triple lock must be protected

by Steve Beasant on 20 July, 2017

Responding to the government’s announcement that the state pension age will rise to 68, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Stephen Lloyd said:

“If the government wants to make people work later, it is even more important to protect the triple lock.

“Once people finally do retire they must be able to do so without fear of living in poverty.

“The government must also accept proposals from the Cridland Review to mitigate the impact of these changes.

“That should include introducing a means-tested benefit for vulnerable pensioners, and reforming Universal Credit to better support older people working part-time.”
