HBO Plans Documentary on Cobain

“Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” an authorized documentary about Nirvana’s frontman and songwriter, whose life and work still fascinate music fans 20 years after his suicide in 1994, will have its premiere on HBO in 2015, the network said. A specific date was not given.

The film, named for a widely bootlegged tape collage that Cobain made in the late 1980s, is written and directed by Brett Morgen, whose previous work includes “Crossfire Hurricane” (2012), a documentary about the Rolling Stones’ first 50 years, and “The Kid Stays in the Picture” (2002), an adaptation of the memoir by the film producer Robert Evans. Frances Bean Cobain, the singer’s daughter, is the executive producer.

HBO says that Mr. Morgen was given access to Cobain’s archives, including home movies, private recordings and demos, artwork and journals, and that the film will include footage of Nirvana performances, as well as previously unheard songs by Cobain.
