'I'm baby' is the new 'they did surgery on a grape' and it's beautiful

I'm baby.
By Morgan Sung  on

In better news, a beautifully meaningless meme is on the rise. And did you know I'm baby?

The internet loves nothing more than absurd inside jokes. If you know, you know, and if you don't, you're not baby. I'm baby.

Maybe it's because we're all exhausted from the pressure of existing in this capitalist hell, or maybe it's because we're all secretly longing for the simplicity of being a literal baby, but there's one thing for certain: I'm baby. There are few captions that can be universally applied to both thirst trap selfies and semi-public emotional breakdowns on the finsta, but "I'm baby" somehow encapsulates the vast expanse of humanity in two easy words. I'm. Baby.

It's been around since 2017, but began gaining traction in mainstream meme use in late February. The original context is darker: A 14-year-old girl was babysitting her niece when an intruder broke into the home. She texted her mother, who instructed her to call 911 while they hid.

The mother, who must have missed a tragically hilarious autocorrect, also texted "I'm baby." The screenshot was included in a bizarre clickbait ad on Tumblr, which went viral for just how ridiculous it sounded.

In the last month, I'm baby became something like "They did surgery on a grape." The more you repeat it, the more nonsensical it becomes and the funnier it is. As Stay Hipp notes, it has cutesy, sexual connotations too. Calling someone daddy is a whole thing, but declaring yourself baby? Very chill.

In conclusion, I'm baby.
