We live in a country where if you have enough money, you can buy your way out of jail while you await trial. This is profoundly unjust to people who don’t have ready cash on hand. Today, for #FreeThePeopleDay, consider donating the cost of one New Year’s Eve cocktail to a bail fund.

You can find a list of community bail funds here. These groups regularly pay bail for people who can’t afford it, and also work to eliminate the cash bail system or pretrial detention entirely.
If you’re staying in for New Year’s (highly recommended if you hate crowds and/or have small children, hello), make yourself a drink and donate what you would have paid for a night of drinks out. Today donations are being matched and there’s a hashtag to talk about it, but you can donate to these organizations throughout the year.
