Well, for starters, we like the electric blue color as well as the vertical doors. GLM, an electric-vehicle startup, showed off prototypes of two of its models at an event in Hong Kong last week. Naturally, the company is looking to make a big splash across the East China Sea.
Founded in 2010, GLM says it has worked with more than 100 vehicle-technology companies to create its two models, and added that it's the first Japanese electric vehicle manufacturer certified by the Ministry of Transportation. The company has been working on a model called the GLM-ZZ for the past two years. That vehicle can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds.
The model that could establish the company, though, is the GLM-G4, which was first put on display at the Paris Motor Show last month. That car, with its racy lines, also has a 0-60 mph time of less than four seconds. More importantly, GLM says the model can go almost 250 miles on a full electric charge, though that's under the more lenient NEDC standards. The cars' weight is reduced by use of composites, while their multistage transmissions boost performance.
GLM is hoping to establish a research and development center in China, and ultimately looks to sell its models in what's emerged as the world's largest electric-vehicle market, which has been expanded in part from substantial government subsidies. The company manufactured its vehicles' chassis, power systems and vehicle control units, and is also touting itself as a parts provider for third-party automakers, noting its goal to "customize our key technologies for various types of vehicles so as to popularize electric vehicles."
