Hands up if you’ve killed a succulent. Yeah, me too. Succulents and cacti are great beginner plants in theory because they can survive a little neglect. But that’s actually what makes them terrible for brown thumbs like me and (perhaps) you.
But plant blogger Cristina of Throw Some Herbs on That Shit has some sage (get it?) advice: the best beginner plants are the ones that train you to check on them daily. She recommends pothos because it grows quickly, and is easy to keep alive if you actually pay attention to it.
She says: “This plant will communicate its needs VERY well, so you’ll get in the habit of checking/watering/trimming it. If you make a mistake, it bounces back and can be revived easily!” That may not make it the easiest plant to grow, but it will be fun and rewarding. Other plants fulfill some of these criteria, but pothos sounds like a great beginner choice to start with. It’s the one that looks like the photo above. Enjoy building a new friendship with this lush, green, hard-to-kill-but-you-gotta-pay-attention plant.
