If Margot Robbie Can Make Peace With the Barbie Snubs, So Can You!

Even though Barbie received eight Academy Award nominations—technically making it the second most acclaimed film in 2024—a startling few have acted normal about Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s respective omissions from the Best Director and Best Actress categories. And when Hillary Clinton weighs in, you know it’s bad. Fortunately, one of said snubbed finally stepped in to put a stop to all the parasocial sympathy tweets.

This week, Robbie made her first public appearance since the Oscar nominations were announced, at a SAG screening of Barbie. Inevitably, she was asked to address all of the online outrage: “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed,” Robbie told the audience. “Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the best picture nod.”

Indeed, not only did the film nab a Best Picture nomination, but Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, and a slew of behind the scenes talent also scored recognition. “People’s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience,” she continued. “Whether it’s seeing what people are writing online, or even just seeing how much pink I can see in this room right now…I’ve never been a part of something like this. Not like this. I’ve done comic book stuff and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different. It still feels very different. And I can’t think of a time when a movie’s had this effect on culture. And it’s amazing to be in the eye of the storm.”

Frankly, Barbie’s effect on culture might be a tad overblown, but Robbie’s grace and enthusiasm are a thing to be admired here. Whether you loved the film, loathed it, or just liked it, this is one classy Barbie.

Robbie did, however, express some disappointment about Gerwig not getting a Best Director nom: “Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director. What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.” Given Gerwig has been very candid about the great pains she went to just to get this glaringly ambitious movie made, I get it. It’s a bummer…

That said, snubs are inevitable in every awards season, and if the people who’ve made millions off of it can move on, so can you!
