Emma Stone to Play Young, Possibly Punk Cruella De Vil in 101 Dalmatians Origin Story

What is going on?? Does no Hollywood pitch meeting end in not-a-movie?

On Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that, after much speculation, Emma Stone is slated to star as the title diva in Cruella, a live-action origin story in the Disney’s 101 Dalmatians universe.

I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie is reportedly in talks to direct. Director Alex Timbers had previously been attached to the project but had to back out due to scheduling issues.

We know little else about the project, except this, per THR: “Stone will play infamous villain Cruella De Vil in what is being billed as an origin story, set in the 1980s with a punk vibe.” Cruella is the wealthy beneficiary of a fur fortune, and the figure of the heiress who lays claim to a punk phase is disappointingly familiar. It’s a good fit for Stone though, and I’m all for telling fuller stories about dramatic women who wear fur.
