What's New on Netflix in July 2021

New seasons of two of 2020's best shows, plus the return of a 1980's icon.

As a child of the 1980s, I was obsessed with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe—I have a vivid memory of being three years old and arguing with my mom about whether or not Eternia’s greatest hero wore pajamas to bed (luckily the dude did wear a diaper).

Given that, you’d think I’d be thrilled about Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Netflix’s reboot of the toyetic animated series, especially given it’s coming from certified ‘80s geek Kevin Smith and has a stellar cast, including Chris Wood as He-Man, Mark Hamill as Skeletor, as well as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lena Headey, and Stephen Root. But that was before I watched the trailer. Not that it looks bad—it looks pretty cool, actually, with an updated anime style and far better production values than the cheap-o original—but then this text popped onscreen halfway through:

Why you gotta remind me of the inevitable crush of time like that, Netflix. Jeez. The series premieres July 23.

Well, at least I can lift my spirits by watching the streamer’s other two big shows premiering this month, as we’re getting second seasons of a pair of their best 2020 debuts, the ultra-uncomfortable sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson (July 6) and Mindy Kaling’s transcendent teen coming-of-age comedy Never Have I Ever (July 15).

I’m also pretty jazzed for the action-thriller Gunpowder Milkshake (July 14), which is clearly straight from the John Wick/Atomic Blonde mold, but there’s certainly nothing wrong with that when the cast of your lady assassins revenge film includes Karen Gillen, Lena Headey (again), Carla Gugino, Michelle Yeoh, and Angela Basset.

And then there’s Sexy Beasts (July 21), a reality dating show that seems basically like Blind Date meets The Masked Singer, and I think you should just watch this trailer and decide if that seems hilarious or horrifying:

Once you’ve washed your brain clean, check out everything else coming to (and leaving) the service in July.
