The Queen's Gambit has captured the public imagination in the way few television dramas usually do...

AT FIRST GLANCE a television drama about a troubled alcoholic and pill-poppin' chess prodigy might not be regarded as the kind of series destined for ratings success. But this seven part series  has barely been off the top of the charts since it was released three weeks ago. The Queen's Gambit  is  likely to be Netflix's most successful show this year.

Both an enthralling thriller and emotionally powerful coming-of-age drama, its bound together by the stellar performance from Anya Taylor-Joy as chess prodigy Beth Harmon.

While the drama starkly charts her fall, it is also a tale of redemption. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why The Queen's Gambit has captured the public's imagination; in an age when a lethal virus has exposed the fragility and injustices of our current world, The Queen's Gambit suggests that we still hold all the moves and can still win, despite the odds seemingly stacked against us...
