Imagine, you're about to see one of the most anticipated films of the year, and the movie's star turns up to serve you popcorn.

That's exactly what happened for cinema-goers about to watch Captain Marvel in New Jersey, when Carol Danvers herself, Brie Larson, turned up for a surprise visit on Saturday.

Wearing a kickass Captain Marvel tracksuit by Juicy Couture and sipping a soda from a cup with her own face on it, Larson dropped by the AMC theater in Clifton Commons on the opening weekend for the latest instalment of the MCU.

"I just heard that I was on the cups and popcorn and I wanted to see for myself," Larson told the understandably excited audience.

Earlier, Larson had even jumped behind the candy bar, serving up popcorn and soda like a hero.

Of course, there were gleeful selfies aplenty to be taken with the Marvel star.

"Sometimes @brielarson just comes to say hi at your movie theater and you gotta act like she isn't on your shirt," wrote Instagram user @yarazardz.

It's the latest in a series of strong promotional activities for Captain Marvel, including a double Danvers situation at the European Gala, the film's tie-wearing cat star at the world premiere, and these nostalgic optical illusion movie posters which will either delight or infuriate you.

Captain Marvel is in cinemas now, and is absolutely crushing it at the box office — whether you like it or not.
