Between the nautically huge full-sized Chevy sedans of the early-to-middle 1970s and the rounded orca-style lines of the 1991-1996 big Chevy sedans, there were the "box Chevy" Impalas and Caprices of the 1977-1990 model years. These cars were everywhere, for decade after decade, but attrition has cut the numbers down to nearly nothing. Here's one in Denver that made it to age 34 before reaching the end.
Under the hood is a small-block V8 with computer-controlled Quadrajet carburetor. If this is the original engine (unlikely, given how readily Chevy V8s get swapped), it's either a 267 with 115 horsepower (no, that's not a typo) or a 305 with 145 horsepower.
It appears that the roof has been cut off and reattached, for reasons that must have made sense at the time. Perhaps the car suffered a rollover crash early in its life and received major body repairs.
