America wants cowboys — or, specifically, America wants Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt and a bunch of brooding, dirt-speckled, bad-guys-gone-good playing cowboys — and they'll shell out millions of dollars to see them wreak havoc in the name of freedom.

The Magnificent Seven definitively topped out the box office its opening weekend with a $35 million debut, beating animated comedy Storks and clinching one of the most successful openings for a Western film ever.

The film is a remake of a remake, basically: Antoine Fuqua's star-studded 2016 version is an update of the 1960 Western that put a spin on Akira Kurosawa's epic Seven Samurai. With a cast that includes Washington, Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Peter Sarsgaard and Vincent D'Onofrio, The Magnificent Seven boasts a serious draw of heavy-hitting talent, which definitely explains why the flick did better than a bird movie.

As for the Best Western Opening ever deal: Without accounting for inflation, The Hollywood Reporter explains that Westerns don't typically soar at the box office, but that the record holder, 2011's Cowboys & Aliens, brought in $36.4 million when it opened.

Honestly, there are worst things than being the first runner-up in a race with a movie that has both "cowboys" and "aliens" in the title, so kudos to the Magnificent Seven all around.
