Musicians Union Ratifies Met Opera Contract

Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians, which represents the players in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, announced on Tuesday that its members had ratified the labor agreement that the union negotiated with the Metropolitan Opera last month.

The union did not give details of the contract, but Tino Gagliardi, the president of Local 802, said in a statement that the contract “allows for financial oversight and includes a mechanism for artists to collaborate in finding meaningful efficiencies” in the company’s budget.

Three of the four most crucial unions that participated in the tense negotiations with the Met that wrapped up at the end of August have now ratified their contracts: Local 1 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, which represents those responsible for building the company’s sets and props and seeing to the sound and lighting, and Local 764, which represents the costume shop and dressers, announced last week that they had ratified their contracts. The American Guild of Musical Artists, which represents the chorus, dancers, soloists and stage managers, has still not completed its voting and vote counting, but is expected to do so by Friday, a spokesman for the union said.

The Met’s season is scheduled to open with a new production of Mozart’s “Nozze di Figaro” on Sept. 22.
