Airbnb hosts who want to give back can now donate a portion—or all—of their profits to help people affected by disasters, conflict or critical illness.
The company has announced a new initiative called “Donations,” in which hosts can have a percentage (from 1% to 100%) automatically deducted from each payout to help those in need find temporary housing. Currently, Airbnb is working with the following organizations:
International Rescue Committee, which helps refugees rebuild their lives with support, housing and education after relocation to the United States.
All Hands and Hearts, a disaster-relief organization that assists communities impacted by natural disaster.
Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes for children with critical illness (and includes respite trips and lodging).
“Donations” is an offshoot of Airbnb’s Open Homes program, in which hosts can donate the use of their housing to evacuees, relief workers and refugees. But for those who can’t afford to host for free and still want to help, the Donations program may be a better fit.
All donations are tax deductible and will go directly to the non-profit organizations (Airbnb will cover any processing fees), and the money will help provide temporary housing or travel expenses for medical needs.
