Mario Kart 8 Deluxe coming to the Nintendo Switch in April

The original Mario Kart 8 was the WiiU's best-selling game.

Despite falling behind the competition from Sony and Microsoft in terms of sales, Nintendo still has a large and loyal fan base that is excited about the new console – the Switch. And so any time you bring up Mario Kart, it's sure to excite that base into a frenzy. At a press conference yesterday, Nintendo finally announced the price and launch date of the Switch, along with a number of launch or near-launch titles, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Rather than an all-new game, Deluxe is an overhaul and update to the original Mario Kart 8. That game debuted in 2014 for the WiiU. As the console's best-selling title, it should be no surprise that Nintendo wants to cash in on the success. In addition to new maps, characters, and vastly improved game modes, including the much-maligned Battle Mode.

Deluxe will support up to 8 players in local wireless multiplayer. There is some speculation that the game will use the Switch's portable capabilities for local split-screen on the one of the systems small, portable monitors, but it seems more likely that it's just misleading marketing and not a new feature.

The Nintendo Switch launches on March 3 at a price of $299. That's a bold price, considering Nintendo's recent lack of success compared to its rivals. Unfortunately, fans of Mario Kart will have to wait until Deluxe releases on April 28.
