It's been a tough run for Salvation Burger, acclaimed chef April Bloomfield and restaurateur Ken Friedman's Midtown burger joint. Several months after opening in 2016, the restaurant was forced to close following a fire that "severely damaged" the kitchen. The restaurant finally reopened in December of that year, but the hiatus was too much to bounce back from: the restaurant will close Saturday.
In a letter to employees released to Eater, the duo cited the "challenges" of being closed for seven months coupled with the "difficulty picking up steam following our reopening." Staff from the restaurant will be shuttled to the restaurateurs' other businesses, which include White Gold, Salvation Taco and The Spotted Pig.
Salvation Burger's location in the Pod Hotel may be no more, but Bloomfield and Friedman know NYC loves a good burger (the bleu cheese-topped version at The Spotted Pig is often heralded as the city's best). "This will not be the last that you hear of Salvation Burger," they promise in their (temporary) farewell letter. "We believe in its spirit and hope to find a new home when the time is right."
