Inside Princess Margaret's marriage to Antony Armstrong-Jones

The new season of The Crown introduces Princess Margaret’s future husband, Antony Armstrong-Jones, to the Netflix hit's viewers. The late society photographer, later titled Lord Snowdon by Queen Elizabeth, is played by "Downton Abbey" alum Matthew Goode. Margaret is played by Vanessa Kirby.

But the true story of the couple's real-life relationship is just as fascinating as any TV show.

The pair married in 1960 and divorced 18 years later, staying on good terms until Margaret’s death in 2002. He was the first commoner in over 400 years to marry into the royal family.

For one, leading up to their marriage, Armstrong-Jones was having an affair with one of his closest friends’ wives, Camilla Fry.

Camilla gave birth to their daughter, Polly, three weeks into Armstrong-Jones' honeymoon with Princess Margaret. Polly didn’t learn Armstrong-Jones was her biological father until taking a DNA test in 2004.

“['The Crown'] is very explicit about the promiscuity of Armstrong-Jones -- and Margaret wasn’t aware of it," royal historian Robert Lacey told People about the show's second season. "That will open a lot of people’s eyes."

Another source of interest has long been Armstrong-Jones' rumored bisexuality.

"I didn't fall in love with boys, but a few men have been in love with me," he once said.

Princess Margaret learned her ex-lover, Group Capt. Peter Townsend, planned to wed another woman, despite a pact to never marry anyone else. Her biographer, Christopher Warwick, told People that she once pointed out that she married Tony five years after that split -- so it wasn't necessarily a conscious rebound.

Regardless of what spurred their marriage, Margaret and Tony enjoyed a glamorous live in the '60s together.

"Stories about them were legion, with their star-studded parties at Kensington Palace," Warwick said. "If you were invited by them, you were being invited to breathe in rarified air.”
