A 67-year-old woman has died of injuries sustained after she was struck by a pickup truck driver while walking through a Chelsea crosswalk this weekend, police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, Chelsea resident Melissa McClure was crossing West 15th Street alongside her younger sister on Saturday night, when the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado slammed into them both while making a left turn from 6th Avenue.

McClure, who lived on West 15th Street steps from where she was struck, was rushed to the hospital with severe head trauma, and died of her injuries on Tuesday, police said.

Her sister, 59-year-old Dorry Chitwood, also suffered a laceration to the back of her head, but was released from the hospital in stable condition.

The driver remained at the scene and has not been charged.

McClure is at least the 70th pedestrian to be killed on city streets this year—representing a more than 20 percent increase from this time last year.

Last Thursday, a 77-year-old woman was struck and killed by a cab driver while walking on 8th Avenue and 22nd Street, just a few blocks from the site of McClure's death.
