You may have seen it decorating a fancy foyer on HGTV: eucalyptus, a muted green plant with long stems and circular leaves sprouting along its length. Commonly used in spas and bathhouses, it’s also a popular addition for essential oils diffusers, massage therapy, and aromatherapy. And while spending a day at the spa may not be easy these days, you can add the stress-relieving eucalyptus smell to help bring the spa feel to your own bathroom.
Eucalyptus can help relieve stress
When made into a tea, eucalyptus releases antioxidants that fight inflammation and can lower stress. Eucalyptus is also known to help with symptoms associated with the common cold. It’s no wonder so many products are made with it: Dr. Bronner’s eucalyptus body wash, Vicks VapoRub, and even cough drops. Add the raw plant to your shower for many of the same aromatherapy effects (or just because you like the smell).
Where to get fresh eucalyptus
The eucalyptus plant can be found in your local flower shop and in some grocery stores or already bundled on Etsy. Buying a bushel online can range from $35-$249 wholesale, and can come in several variations—the most recognizable is the Argyle Apple eucalyptus, also known as the “True Blue.” Although True Blue is the most popular, no need to be too picky, as they all smell great. The fresher the better, though, as fresh eucalyptus will last longer in your shower.
How to use a bundle of eucalyptus stems
Grab some scissors and natural twine to assemble your eucalyptus bushel (natural twine is biodegradable and better for tying plants). Depending on the fullness of your eucalyptus, use three to twelve for your bundle, and cut the stems evenly to the desired length, removing a few of the leaves from the bottom of the stems for easier wrapping. Take about two feet of twine and wrap the stems together, tying the bundle tightly. Use the twine to make a loop for hanging the branches under your shower head—not directly under the water, but close enough for the steam to reach the plant. The smell will last for about three weeks, at which point it’s time to get new branches and recreate your fancy-smelling home spa all over again.
