DeVos - I'll Be a Strong Advocate for Public Education and Accountability

Democratic senators on Dec. 14, called DeVos to ensure that a political action committee she controlled pays $5.3 million in fines and penalties owed for campaign finance violations in Ohio eight years ago. DeVos’ All Children Matter PAC broke Ohio election law by funneling $870,000 in contributions from its nationwide PAC to its Ohio affiliate in 2008. The DeVos confirmation hearings finally ended but not without a lot of whining and a few falsehoods sprinkled in just for fun.

Each Democrat who took their turn to grill the pro-school-choice advocate began with complaining about the injustice of not having enough time to ask more than one round of questions. Chairman Lamar Alexander reminded his Democrat colleagues that the rules were established during their own confirmation hearings during the Obama years. One round of questions per senator. Each Democrat senator had to continue make the point for the evening news soundbites and fundraising letters. In the end they received a pretty stern rebuke from Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine).

DeVos seemed largely unruffled, stumbling only once or twice when strongly berated to “only answer yes or no.” Occasionally, school choice advocates come off as anti-public school. However, DeVos was careful to open her hearing by expressing her support for public schools and for equality of opportunity.

Traditionally Democrat politicians part ways with their base on the issue of school choice. While the majority of Americans support choice in education, the Democrat party remains tied to their union donors on the issue. Devos was predestined to be the victim of cruel assertions and falsities about her school choice advocacy. She was questioned heavily about her intentions to support funding for more college options for underprivileged students as well as continuing to protect public schools.

Why is that when anti-choice people talk about more options for college students they never extend that same logic to primary education?

DeVos was poised and polite throughout her hearing despite being frequently interrupted by senators like Bernie Sanders and Al Franken. She reminded America that education belongs to all of us, parents deserve to be involved in the educational decisions for their children, and above all things, the students of America are who matters most.

If confirmed I will be a strong advocate for great public schools. But if a school is troubled or unsafe or not a good fit for a child…we should support a parent’s right to enroll their child in a high quality alternative. Its really pretty simple. Every child in America deserves to be a safe environment that is free from discrimination…Every parent in America dreams of a future where their children have access to school with the rigor, challenges and safe environments that prepare them for a brighter, more hopeful tomorrow. Every teacher in America dreams of breaking free from standardization so that they can employ their unique creativity.
