Meet the Team: Jess

Another month, another colleague- but this time we’re exploring the world of our Compliance Adviser, Jess. As you’d expect, whilst Financial Wellness Group puts customers at the heart of everything it does, like all financial businesses we also work with a tight regulatory and legal framework. It’s Jess’ job to advise the business on what those rules are and help ensure that we operate within both the letter and the spirit of them. But when she isn’t working (too) hard, there’s nothing Jess loves more than binge-watching a new series and enjoying some well-deserved downtime- who doesn’t?

Tell us about your role at FWG?

As a Legal and Compliance Adviser I work to provide advice, guidance and support to the business on legal and regulatory matters. This includes making sure we adhere to external rules and internal controls. Our products and services can be complex and, naturally, this means so are the laws and regulations. I work to understand these and ensure that they are clearly communicated and explained to the business, but I promise it’s not as boring as it sounds!

What led you to this role?

I originally joined Financial Wellness Group in a Personal Assistant role, whilst studying for my law degree part-time. The plan was to move into something more aligned with my degree and to then become a qualified solicitor. Financial Wellness Group has been fantastic in supporting me through this and have made it possible for me to pursue my career goals. And more importantly, I’ve had the chance to work with and be mentored by, some really amazing and experienced people.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

Compliance is all about ensuring the integrity and reputation of the industry is upheld to protect customers. I love that I have a role in helping customers on their financial wellness journey. Also, the role itself is great because it spans every single area of the business. This means no two days are the same and I get to work with a wide range of colleagues in completely different areas.

What’s something you find challenging about your work?

The job is never done. There are always areas I want to get more involved in and so it’s hard to know when to call it a day sometimes.

When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A paediatrician – this was until I realised my Peppa Pig knowledge was not cut out for the job.

How would your friends describe you?

An outgoing, recluse who is hard-working, sassy and honest (maybe a bit too much sometimes).

What’s one thing you’re really good at?

Multi-tasking between work, studies and having a life. I’ve finally learnt the importance of downtime.

What show are you currently binge-watching?

I am preparing myself for my next series. It is a huge commitment because I am the Binge-Watching Queen, so I need to make sure what I choose next is definitely worth sacrificing sleep for.
