LOS ANGELES — Is the coming “Suffragette” a political movie? At first glance, it looks period and foreign, the story of Britain’s early feminist movement, with Carey Mulligan in the lead role. On second glance, it could resonate in a presidential contest that finds a woman within reaching distance of the presidency. Maybe?

These are the kinds of questions that Hollywood insiders are eager to figure out as they trek to the mountains of Colorado for the 42nd annual Telluride Film Festival, which starts on Friday. In keeping with tradition, the festival only made public its lineup on Thursday, with “Suffragette” among the world premieres.

Twenty-seven new films will be shown through Monday (plus a surprise selection or two), and they include the high-profile “Steve Jobs,” directed by Danny Boyle, written by Aaron Sorkin and starring Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet. (Mr. Boyle, Mr. Sorkin and Ms. Winslet are expected to attend Telluride; fans may have to wait until next month, when the film plays the New York Film Festival, to see Mr. Fassbender.)

Among the other selections: “Black Mass,” starring Johnny Depp as the Boston underworld king James (Whitey) Bulger; “Carol,” starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara as lovers in 1950s-era New York; “Beasts of No Nation,” which marks a high-profile dive into feature film by Netflix; “Room,” the unusual story of a mother (Brie Larson) and her child; “Spotlight,” about The Boston Globe’s investigation of child abuse in the Catholic Church; and “Son of Saul,” a Hungarian film set in 1944 at Auschwitz.
