It's barely jacket weather out there right now, but snow and slush are threatening to create a messy Wednesday morning commute. The Department of Sanitation issued a Snow Alert today, as a cold front plans to sweep in and transform the rain expected later into the white stuff, probably when you are sleeping.

"As the rain transitions to snow Wednesday morning, you could face messy road conditions during your morning commute. Public transportation is the best way to get around, as it helps to alleviate any potential gridlock," NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Deanne Criswell said earlier today.

The Winter Weather Advisory is currently set for 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday. From NYC EM:

According to the latest National Weather Service forecast, rain will transition to a wintry mix of rain and snow early Wednesday morning, before transitioning to snow by the morning commute. Light to moderate snow is forecast to continue through the late morning before tapering off in the early afternoon. A total accumulation of two inches of snow is forecast, with locally higher amounts possible. New Yorkers should prepare for messy road conditions during Wednesday morning’s commute.

In preparation, NYC EM plans to activate its emergency operations center this evening, and if the snowfall is more significant than expected, they have all the usual city resources on hand, including 265,000 tons of salt. However, it's highly unlikely the snow will accumulate on paved surfaces since the ground is warm right now, so don't expect to fall knee-deep into powder when you leave your apartment tomorrow morning.

DSNY encourages New Yorkers to use mass transit and avoid the roads if they can, as it will potentially be a Gridlock Alert Day. As for the possibility of a Snow Day, it's unlikely schools will close Wednesday. (For updates, visit the City's Severe Weather website at www.nyc.gov/severeweather or nyc.gov/EmergencyManagement.)

To recap: it's close to 60-degrees right now, in a few hours it will start to rain and the temps will drop to the 40s, and overnight the freeze will bring in some snow. By Saturday it'll be up to nearly 60 degrees again. This is normal and everything is fine!
