Think of the Mercedes-AMG GT4 race car as a super serious GT R

True to his word, AMG head Tobias Moers revealed another Mercedes-AMG GT race car. This one is the simply named GT4, and it's based on the top-tier, 577-horsepower GT R sports car. We're guessing it's faster.

The resemblance is particularly evident in the front and rear fascias, which look relatively unchanged from the road car, while the huge wing and fueling ports are a pretty good competition giveaway. The GT4 further expands the AMG customer racing program, adding to the recently revealed GT3 car. AMG hasn't said what will power the GT4 – it could use a version of the road car's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 or a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter, like the GT3 does. Pricing also hasn't been revealed for the GT4, but we expect it will fall somewhere below the roughly $420,000 price tag of the GT3 model.

The Mercedes-AMG GT4 race car will face down an interesting selection of opponents that have also been revealed this year. Back in March, McLaren showed the GT4 version of the 570S, and just last month, Ford unveiled a Ford Mustang GT4 race car. Not only that, but BMW has a GT4 version of the M4 in the works, however that car won't be ready until 2018. These are just the newest models. Chevrolet, Porsche, Maserati, Aston Martin, and KTM have all participated in GT4-class race series around the globe this past year.
