How to Keep Storage on your Mac Clean

During heavy use, your Mac is filled with various applications, system updates, documents, photos and many other files that clog the storage and cause a slowdown effect. Read this article to the end, and you’ll learn how to keep storage on your Mac clean.

1. First of all, you need to clear the startup list completely. Most applications that you install are automatically added to the startup list, and whenever the device is turned on or rebooted, the system has to spend resources to run all of these applications and services. As long as there are not many of them, they do not have a significant effect on productive capacity, but sooner or later this moment comes. Fortunately, within OS X it is very convenient to control and regulate all the “economy”:

  • Open the system settings and go to the “Users and Groups” section;
  • Select your account in the list on the left and open the “entry objects” tab;
  • Look carefully at the list and leave only those applications that you need right after the system is started.

2. Update the system to the latest version of OS X. Your Mac should be updated all alone, but it’s worth noting that the computer runs on the newest OS. This can be easily verified using the Mac App Store. Open the application and go to the “Updates” tab. The icon will show the number of available updates that you can download both together and single-handedly. For the future, it’s worth checking and enabling the automatic download and updates’ installation in the App Store section of the system settings;

3. Put the disc in order. One of the best ways to keep the storage clean is paring your hard drive from various files that you no longer need. Such files’ category includes all sorts of logs, caches, temporary files, extensions, duplicate files and so on. To find and delete this file debris, you can resort to specialized applications or use Disk Utility:

  • Run Disk Utility and select your hard disk in the left menu;
  • Go to the “first aid” tab and press the “check” button, and then “fix”;
  •  The system will start scanning and correct errors if any are found.

After that, check your home folder and other folders on the disk for cache content or temporary files that you no longer need. If you do not want to dig into the file system – it’s better to use the profile utility program.

4. There are a lot of unused language files on every Mac. Usually, we use Russian and English. The rest of localizations, with which developers supply their applications, remain within the hard drive as “dead weight”. They can be deleted manually using some special application. For example, the program CleanMyMac can do this. During cleaning it always scans the file system, reveals the presence of unused language files. Within just a few minutes the program will find hidden files, random objects, obsolete elements and other “garbage”. When you uninstall applications, CleanMyMac completely uninstalls them, carefully checking if there are any directories left. In other words, CleanMyMac is the computer’s “orderly”;

5. Peel the desktop. Sometimes user prefers to store files and application shortcuts on the desktop, considering it very convenient. It’s a delusion. Because the system has to handle all these relations, so this approach to storing and organizing your workspace can negatively affect the productive capacity and system responsiveness. It’s better removing all out-of-use icons and moving documents and files to the appropriate folders;

6. Clean the “basket” regularly. No matter how trite it may sound, but cleaning the “basket” can free tens of GB within the computer. When you delete files in OS X, they are sent to the “basket”, from where they can be returned. Because of this “pardoning” the files, they do not practically change their size when they hit the trash. A month later the “basket” can take tens of GB of storage. To press the “Clear” button will take one second, and the result will be instant.

Only if all the above recommendations are of a routine nature, you will be able to keep storage on your Mac clean, otherwise, you can read this guide.
