Let's Talk About the Male Producer

CelebritiesEntertainment

On this week’s episode of DirtCast, Maddie and Megan are joined by staff writer Hazel Cills to discuss her piece, “Jack Antonoff and the Unrelenting Shadow of the Male Producer.” From Phil Spector to Dr. Luke, the men “behind-the-scenes” often refuse to stay there, looming large (and sometimes ominously) over women’s careers.

Male music producers are regularly given a frustrating amount of credit for the work of female musicians, but what is it about this particular male producer that is so especially cloying? Is it the fact that he constantly gives interviews about how much he loves working with women ? Or the fact that he regularly appears on stage alongside them, and that their songs are referred to in profiles as “Jack Antonoff songs”? How much of this comes back to the idea of the Male Feminist Ally who makes it all about himself?
