'38 Rue Utopia ~ Ep.58

No fun, my babe
No fun
~ The Stooges 1969

Kozo Mio

There's 5 of them.
They face her with 9 eyes direct.
They start with the easy questions.
“Where’d the fuck you come from?” says the young one with one eye.
“The Clave”
“Which one?”
“Doesn’t have another name”
It goes like this for a while; mad shit without structure; no clipboards; no tick-boxes; no paperwork.
“Ever been to Bigmark?”
“No”
“She looks a lot like that woman…” says the little bald guy.
“You come from a place with no name?”
“…you know, the one in the meat factory…”
“I’m coming home… I was born here”
“So why’d you leave then?”
“Wasn’t my choice”
“So what? she looks like the woman in the factory?” says the leathery woman in black.
“Are you saying you were kidnapped?”
“What’s her name, fuck, my memory’s fucked, you know, her that was doing the android shit? - Looks like her”
“…No… I dunno; I’m looking for my father.”
“Does he know you exists? What I mean is, this isn’t long lost families, we’re not reuniting anybody against either party’s will”
“Ahh you know the Japanese one… Annie something”
“She’s Vietnamese” say Eva, “She’s my mother”
“You said you’re looking for your father? Are you looking for your mother too?”
“She’s dead”
There is a momentary pause, almost unnoticeable.
“Why you want to come back now then? What made you leave ‘The Clave’?”
“I got tired of rotting in the mud”
Eventually the interview winds down to barter and when all is said and done; the customs negotiations for Eva’s entrance into Metal are completed without much more ado; barter is made and conditions are set. The Inquisitors require her to hand over the zip-gun, it’s crude outline having glowed on all the scans taken during her journey inward from the gate.
Such an unreliable weapon, they say, “doesn’t do nobody any good”
They explain that, once settled in, she may seek defensive replacement in a choice of training courses, ranging from the use of weapons to the development of the body as a weapon; adding “it‘s every fucker’s right to defend themselves, but not every fucker knows how”
“Knowledge is power… as some fucker once said.” Says the skinny bloke, his hair streaked across his forehead; his skin flushed with some inner fire that glows in his eyes.
“Don’t you be no trouble now,” Says the old woman, her hair a pyramid of grey chaos; she touches Eva where her eyebrows meet, “don’t be no trouble,” then points to the door with a perfectly manicured index fingernail, highly glossed purple, in which Eva imagines, as the finger retreats from her brow to do the pointing, she sees her own reflection.

You are too kind Harlequin - I'm glad you enjoyed the reflection in the fingernail; it took me about an hour to get the last paragraph to portray what I saw in my head.
