For all the advances in fuel-saving technology, Americans are still loving their gasoline. In fact, last month, petroleum deliveries were the highest they've been for any September since 2007. They averaged 19.6 million barrels per day, which is one percent higher than September 2015.
According to the API, our gasoline consumption was also a record setter. The total deliveries of "motor gasoline" reached nearly 9.4 million barrels per day last month, up 1.1 percent from last September and enough to be called the highest September on record.
Since September falls outside the busy summer travel season, these month-specific records don't mean that we used more gasoline last month than in any month ever. Petroleum deliveries for September 2016, for example, were down 2.6 percent from August 2016. But, just like with auto sales, each month has its own personality, shall we say, so it makes sense to compare them to each other in different years. And on that scale, we used more gasoline last month than ever before. The challenge remains.
