A woman was rushed to the hospital on Friday after plunging into a pit on a busy Midtown sidewalk, authorities said.

According to an FDNY spokesperson, emergency personnel responded to a call at around 2:30 today that "someone had fallen into a hole" on 8th Avenue near 35th Street. The woman was transported to Bellevue Hospital, and her condition is unknown.

The spokesperson estimated the depth of the hole to be about five feet.

Christopher Mele, a reporter for the Times, says he saw the woman "drop into this 'covered' pit on 8th Avenue."

"It flipped and she dropped like a bag of sand. Like it was trapdoor," Mele tweeted. She did not seem to lose consciousness, he added.

Additional information about the incident was not immediately not available.

The mysterious pit has since been covered by what appears to be a thin piece of plywood. Maybe don't test it.
