The first day of the impeachment hearings to be publicly broadcast inspired everything from three-dot texting terror to memes about a water bottle. The actual substance was just as compelling — but not everyone has time to watch. Fortunately, Seth Meyers is here to take A Closer Look at the highlights and lowlights of a "both historic and deeply revealing" day on the Hill, and the sniping that happened in between.
Top diplomats George Kent and William Taylor referred to Rudy Giuliani's "irregular" channels of communication with Ukraine "infecting" the diplomatic mission; Vermont Rep. Peter Welch hilariously shut down Rep. Jim Jordan's whistleblower obsession; and the hapless Republican counsel kept pressing a nonplussed Taylor to concede that the Ukraine mess wasn't "as outlandish as it could be."
"That's their best argument," Meyers says incredulously. "Trump should just start running with that and start holding his rallies in front of a giant banner that says 'Not As Guilty As I Could Be!'"
