Sam Darnold switches flights to throw for RB Ronald Jones at second USC pro day

Potential No. 1 overall draft pick Sam Darnold visited the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday and is slated to visit the Denver Broncos on Friday.

Despite the busy schedule, Darnold changed his itinerary to make a pit stop back in Los Angeles on Thursday to throw to former USC running Ronald Jones II.

Jones and wide receiver Deontay Burnett were having a special second pro day because both missed USC's original one with hamstring injuries.

After running a 4.60 at the scouting combine, Jones lowered his time to 4.48 in Thursday's drills despite estimating his hamstring's recovery at 85 percent. He had asked Darnold to attend as a favor.

"He's always been the man," Jones said of his former quarterback coming through for him.

USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin said it shows a lot about Darnold's character.

"When you talk about what kind of guy he is, who does that when you have everything to lose and nothing to gain by doing that?" Martin said, via Ohio.com. "He had a teammate call him out of the blue. It wasn't something that was planned.

"He gets a call yesterday, and he drops everything else. [Darnold said], 'Yes, I'll be there for you, man,' and gets on an airplane, lands in L.A. this morning, comes over at like 6:30 in the morning and throws for Ronald Jones. I mean, it's crazy. And everyone's like, 'What, Sam?' No one expected him to be here, and he's here because he said, 'Hey, man. My teammate called. He needed me.' So he came. That's unbelievable."

Darnold had been in Cleveland to tour the Browns' facility in Berea, Ohio as the team looks to identity which quarterback is the best fit to possibly be selected with the top pick in the 2018 draft.

Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield visited team headquarters on Tuesday, and UCLA's Josh Rosen was reportedly slated to visit Thursday. Wyoming's Josh Allen is expected to visit next week, as is Louisville's Lamar Jackson.

Cleveland took a close look at Darnold at his Pro Day workout in Los Angeles two weeks ago with coach Hue Jackson, offensive coordinator Todd Haley, quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese, general manager John Dorsey and owner Jimmy Haslam in attendance.

Darnold passed for 7,229 yards, 57 touchdowns 22 interceptions in two seasons at USC.

The Browns own the first and fourth overall picks in the 2018 draft.
