Trump planning big increase in federal immigration jails, report says

President Donald Trump is reportedly planning on building more immigration jails. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has put out requests to identify privately run jail sites, in several states. Plans to house 4,000 more detainees have not been publicly announced, according to USA Today.

From January 22nd to September 9th, ICE arrested 97,482 people suspected of being in the country illegally. That’s a 43 percent increase from the same time period in 2016, under President Barack Obama.

Currently, ICE has anywhere between 31,000 and 41,000 detainees each day in federal prisons. Even though these requests for information are out, it may still be a while before new immigration jails are opened. This is just the beginning of the federal contracting process. It does not yet ask for cost estimates.
