Golfer shoots 11-under 60 but loses Stableford comp on a countback
One of Australia’s top young amateur golfers has fired a remarkable 11-under par in the Wednesday comp. But it wasn’t enough for him to take home the chocolates.
Can you imagine taking 60 shots to get around a golf course and it not being enough to win the comp? That’s what happened to top young amateur Jeremy Fuchs yesterday.
Fuchs fired an incredible 11-under par 60 round at Bonnie Doon Golf Club in Sydney that included 12 birdies and a bogey.
The remarkable round was almost capped off with an eagle when his chip-shot his closing hole burned the edge of the hole for what would have been a 59.
Taking 31 shots to play his first nine holes (the back nine at Bonnie Doon), Fuchs then went on a tear making birdies at the first four holes of his back nine. It had Fuchs thinking about the exclusive 59-club.
“I started thinking about 59 when I birdied my first four holes on my second nine to get to 7-under and knew I would have to do something pretty special to shoot it,” Fuchs said. “Then I birdied 6, 7 and 8 and I knew eagle on 9 would be for 59. I had a relatively easy chip and it just burned the edge.”
Playing handicap of +3, the 11-under par round was good enough for a whopping 44 points in the Wednesday Stableford competition.
But it wasn’t enough to win the comp for the day. Fuchs was beaten on a countback.
“Obviously 44 points is great whoever has it but surely they could make an exception in the countback system for a special round?” Fuchs joked.
But without wanting to end the story on a downer, Fuchs did manage to win the scratch comp for the day.
